New Outlook Folder Pane Keeps Disappearing: How to Fix It

You open New Outlook, and the folder list on the left is gone. You check View, click Folder Pane, and it already says Show. You toggle it off and back on. Still gone. Then you drag the window wider by an inch and the folders pop back into view like nothing happened.

No setting fixes this. New Outlook's layout is responsive: it decides on its own how much room your window has, then hides the folder list once the width drops below a threshold. Why Does New Outlook Hide the Folder Pane?

New Outlook hides the folder pane automatically when your window gets narrow, because it prioritizes the message list and reading pane over the folder list. This is a built-in responsive behavior, not a glitch tied to your account or a corrupted profile.

Classic Outlook let you fix a minimum pane width and it stayed there. New Outlook works more like a phone app: below a certain window width, it decides you don't have room for three columns (folders, message list, reading pane) and drops the one it considers least essential. The Folder Pane toggle under the View tab still shows "Show," because as far as Outlook is concerned, the setting is honored. The width check overrides it every time the window resizes.

This is why toggling the setting off and on does nothing. You're not fighting a broken checkbox. You're fighting a layout rule running after the checkbox.

How Do I Get the Folder Pane to Show Again Right Now?

Widen the Outlook window by dragging its edge outward, even by an inch. That single action is the fastest fix, and it works because it pushes the window back above the width threshold that triggers auto-hide.

If dragging the edge doesn't fit your setup (maximized window, snapped window, ultrawide portrait monitor), try these instead:
